I am interested in how to express a memory, in how to create a tangible form to convey something which is inherently intangible. My sculptures explore the notion of human presence, something I find to be elusive, abstract and familiar. They express ephemeral moments as I constantly seek visual means with which to articulate how our presence remains and affects those we have encountered and the world we have lived in. I want to take this concept away from the abstract, from a memory in the minds of family or friends, or perhaps, from the environment we once lived in, and turn it into something which may be touched. Whenever we experience a strong feeling, we tend to express it through touch. Michelangelo’s ‘The Creation of Adam’ from the Sistine Ceiling is a perfect example of this; these sculptures this investigation, they are physical, touchable objects which convey slippery non-physical ideas.
Finally, ‘Graverre’, is a technique I developed which allows me to capture the spontaneity of drawing within glass, I particularly like the shadow effect which is achieved when rendering a drawing this way. This series is slightly different, it still presents fleeting moments, but they are moments I have encountered in the world, rather than ideas which inspire and fascinate me.
