Biography
Mike was born in Perth, Scotland.
He attended Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee (1973 - 1978), graduating with a diploma in Drawing and Painting and the college's Post-Graduate Diploma.
During his studies at Dundee, Mike was awarded the Pat Holmes Memorial Prize for Drawing and studied Landscape painting under Peter Blake at Hospitalfield Summer School in Arbroath.
In subsequent years, the Duncan of Drumfork and Farquhar Reid travelling scholarships took him to Aix-en-Provence and Northern Italy respectively to study the work of Cezanne and Titian.
Mike now works from his studio based in Angus and is inspired by the works of the Post-Impressionists and Scottish Colourists. Other influences include Jack Yeats, Oskar Kokoscha, Sir William MacTaggart and Joan Eardley.
His style is very distinctive, working often in strong, vibrant colour with a variety of textures. More recently, he has crafted many fine etchings, influenced by the works of Whistler and D.Y. Cameron.
Mike has exhibited in group and one-man shows around Scotland and his work may be found in private, corporate and public collections both at home in Scotland and overseas.
