Dodo by Caroline Morgan
Caroline Morgan
Caroline studied sculpture at the Sir Henry Doulton School of Sculpture, and went on to study Fine Art and gain her degree at Norwich Art College.
She is now working on sculptures for the Sydney Charles Studio based in London.
This piece of bronze from the sculptor Caroline Morgan captures perfectly the ungainly form of this 50lb member of the pigeon family.
Extinct since the late 17th Century, the impact of the Dodo's demise is still having repercussions. The recent discovery that a species of tree depended upon the dodo to eat it's seeds in order for them to germinate, has led to a frantic effort to save the tree, since called the dodo tree. Fortunately another species of bird has come to the rescue, and the turkey is now being used to allow the seeds to germinate.
Mauritus, the home of the dodo, has suffered extensively from deforestation, and unfortunately the dodo is not the only bird to have become extinct there, but the dodo has become the iconic symbol of extinction world-wide.
